Excellent healthcare infrastructure, near distance, low-cost air travel, visa-free travel and low prices make Hungary and Lithuania a popular medicare choice for medical tourists in western Europe. Not only have an increasing number of doctors in these countries practiced in the West, the equipment used in the hospitals here is often the same as in the West.

Hungary, in particular, has seen German, Swiss and Austrian patients cross its borders for surgical treatment for over 10 years. Since labor, equipment and real estate costs are far lower than in Western Europe, medical services can be offered at far lower prices than in western Europe.

Especially popular treatments with visiting medical tourists are orthodontal and cosmetic surgery. By various accounts, the percentage of foreigners opting for surgery at top Lithuanian orthodontal and cosmetic clinics is already between 20 and 40%. The prices are a steal. In Lithuania for example, “When compared to the EU mean, prices of odontology services in Lithuania are 6 to 10 times lower, but materials, equipment and work are all of the same quality,” Anastazija Tutkuvienė, president of the Chamber of Odontologists told the media.1

For example, the prices of a face lift surgery in Lithuania ranges from LTL 4 to 8 thousand, and in USA–from LTL 17 to 26 thousand. In Lithuania, a liposuction surgery costs from LTL 2 to 4 thousand over LTL 7 to 10 thousand in USA.

In Budapest, Hungary, a crown, which would cost between Euro 800 and Euro 1,000 in Western Europe, runs only about Euro 250 at an up-market dental office.2
