Before you leave your home country for medical treatment abroad, you should make sure that your hospital/surgeon is absolutely genuine. As with any other growing industry, scams and frauds abound. Here is a checklist to get you on your way:
- Check doctor’s credentials and hospitals he/she is attached to,
- Ask doctor if you can get in touch with some of his ex-patients,
- Check the accreditation norms adopted by the hospital,
- The hospital’s interface with insurance companies,
- Does the legal system of that country take on medical malpractice suits?,
- Handling of legal issues, especially malpractice laws in that country and hospital’s history with malpractice suits,
- In case of any post-operative complications or further medical-care once you are back in your home country, whose responsibility is it? Will your home country’s insurance cover it?
